(younger version of me)I miss my zig-zag cornrows
and mama painfully straightening my hair with a hot comb
I miss full petticoats, knitted sweaters and pure white socks.
I miss my red pumps
I miss mandatory Sunday school and memorizing bible verses
I miss lazy Sunday afternoon’s watching wrestling matches and re-runs of the Young& Restless
I miss being a flower girl at weddings
I miss lacy dresses and pink leggings.
Red nail polish and plastic earrings.
(rocking the 80's boots)I miss hearing mama retelling stories about life in the 70’s
I miss climbing trees and racing boys down the street
In pink tops and blue jean dungarees.
I miss playing in the rain
Skipping ropes and throwing stones then hiding
And playing house with neighbourhood kids.
I miss cassette tapes and rewinding them with a biro pen,
I miss eating hot roasted maize
And having dinner before Seven.
But most of all, I miss the innocence and beauty of being Six and because this week I will think happy thoughts like these that don't involve doctor's appointments, bills and matters alike.
What do you miss about being young?
I miss being a free spirit. Running around everywhere. Wearing whatever my little heart desired (although I kind of do this anyway). Love the post!
ReplyDeleteWell I think I miss the innocence of being naked.

ReplyDeleteBathing outside! If I did now, they'd say I was mad. Playing mummy and daddy. I miss the freedom of being carefree-no responsibilities
A few years from now you will be writing that you miss facebook and twitter, miss television, even miss Kenya as they might all have been replaced by better stuff!!! For me I miss buying fullscaps and envelopes and stamps to write letters to friends!!

ReplyDeleteI miss eating curry flavored mangoes sold at the roadside just outside the school gate........
ReplyDeleteBy six,i was off to boarding school...thinking of it now... we did crazy stuff as kids, from raiding Teachers gardens for raw cassava and Potatoes to *********...OK i should shut up about that...
ReplyDeleteBut that was all because we were hungry kids, food took long to appear in the dinning hall, how do you expect a six year old to survive...
{Never take your six year old to a boarding school]lol
there's so much i miss about being young too...
ReplyDeletewhen you're young you cant wait to get older.. and when you are finally older you wish you were young again.

ReplyDeleteTricia-
ReplyDeleteBeautiful photos. No wonder why you miss your innocent days so much, you are looking so ever delighted in those pics. I miss going to bed early and falling asleep quickly every night, I miss waiting for endless rain to stop sittng at that blue window of my room so that I could go outside to play, I miss playing cricket in the nearby play ground after an afternoon full of rain, I miss the smell of fog which was missing this time when I saw the winters of my hometown after 9 years, probably due to global warming. :-(
Isn't it strange that we miss our childhood and everything associated with it so much now but earlier then, it was just a thing or two.
